Digitisasi Data Historis DiDaH · BMKG & KNMI

Digitized data

An overview of the digital assets that DiDaH produced and that are served to the research community.

The central asset of the project is the digitized historical record itself: millions of observations that were keyed from handwritten and printed logbooks and then quality controlled. Alongside the values sit two things that make them usable: the metadata that documents each station and instrument, and the scans of the original documents, so that any series can be checked against its source.

Values

Digitized observations

Hourly, daily and monthly observations of pressure, temperature, moisture and precipitation, keyed and checked. The inventory is on the data description page.

Context

Metadata

Station histories, instrument details and provenance, researched so that every series can be interpreted correctly and its quality assessed.

Evidence

Scans of the originals

Images of the original logbooks are kept with the data, preserving the primary evidence for the values that were keyed.

How the data are reached

The digitized observations are published through the SACA&D data portal, the regional climate monitoring service for South East Asia. There they are combined with the modern records of the region to form the extended datasets that the project aimed to deliver.

The full account of what was digitized, element by element and station by station, is in the data description, and the results of the work are presented at the 2012 workshop.
